Document Summary
Today: finishing unit 6 & definition of justice. Assessing arguments continued: begging the question, inconsistency. It is a set of alternatives regarding either or statements: alternatives: exhaustive (there is no other alternative, there are all stated) and exclusive (choosing one over the other) Comparison: exclusive but not exhaustive, when it comes to size big or small: exclusive but not exhaustive. First fallacy of false dichotomy: premises of an argument presents us with a choice between alternatives and assumes they are exhaustive when they are not. Ex: in this war you are either for us or against us. Similar to between the middle of a friend argument. Second fallacy of false dichotomy: premises of an argument presents us with a choice between alternatives and assumes they are exclusive when they are not. Ex: steve is a good athlete and an excellent student but cannot be one or the other.
