PHI 1102 Lecture 1: Class 1 - Arguments and Moral Theory
Document Summary
Conclusion - what you want to argue for. Premises - the reasons you give to support the conclusion. Inference - the move from premises to a conclusion. Key terms: (once you know the conclusion, premises, you ask if it is : valid - not possible for the conclusion to be false if the premises are true. Does not guarantee that the premises are true or the conclusion is true. If all premises are true, and the argument is valid, then the conclusion must be true: sound - the argument is valid and the premises are all true. There can be valid arguments that are unsound: false premises, false conclusion, false premises, true conclusion. Claim to be tested: if a card has a consonant on one side, it has an even number on the other side. Flip over d to see if it has an even number. Flip over 4 because it is an even number.
