PHI 2396 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Epicureanism, Kantian Ethics, John Stuart Mill
Document Summary
Jeremy bentham (1748-1832) and john stuart mill (1806-1873), british philosophers are the founders of utilitarianism. Bentham lived in london at the same time as german philosopher emmanuel kant. He was therefore influenced by the philosophical ideas of the enlightenment. Like kant, bentham wants to find out a basis for morality that can be accepted by all without relying on a religious perspective. He seeks a universal criterion which everyone, independently, could join by using his reason. Fifty years later, john stuart mill resume and defend the ideas of bentham. However, living conditions in england at that time are very different from those of germany. In an economic point of view, the 18th century was, in england, the beginning of the industrial revolution. Can"t separate rise of utilitarian from the context of england in that time (industrial. Revolution which will have many consequences on people)
