In health care each situation calls for different responses and behaviour even if it invades privacy. Principle: a fundamental standard of conduct from which other moral standards and judgements draw support for their defence. 3 general principles in bioethics: respect for autonomy, beneficence, justice. Acting freely in accordance with a self-chosen plan. Personal rules free from limitations that prevent meaningful choice: i. e. inadequate understanding. *someone who has no autonomy is: controlled by others, can"t act on their desires i. e. muslim women, prisoners, mental incapacitation. Two conditions: (know for midterm!: liberty: independence from controlling influences, agency: having the ability to act on your desires. Autonomous person: someon e with self-governance, understanding, reasoning, deliberating and indepdnant choice. Autonomous choice: actual governance, rather than capacity for governance. Even autonomous persons with self-governing capacities fail to govern themselves in their choices because of constraits i. e. depression, ignorance.
