Document Summary

Arguments may deal with difficult subject matter, be stated in obscure language, or be long and complex. The goal is to reach the point where we can evaluate arguments, asking questions such as are the premises true? or is the inference logically successful? . First, we have to be able to clarify the relationships between the premises and conclusion(s) Simple argument: only has one inference and one conclusion. Complex argument: has more than one inference and more than one conclusion. A complex argument will always have an intermediate conclusion: acts as a conclusion for what comes before, acts as a premise in a continuing chain of reasoning. Sometimes we omit the then in a statement, but it is conditional nonetheless. If i study hard, then i will pass the test. I will pass the test or i will fail it.
