PHI 1102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Sea Monster, Social Contract
Document Summary
State of nature is a time that never really existed. Universe was starting to be viewed as a system of bodies and motions, like a big machine - A sea monster, anything unnatural, huge and powerful. Hobbes argues that when individuals come together to form political state, they create an entity that like a monster is unnatural or artificial, but at the same time is extremely powerful. Endeavour : what motivates us to do something (because we"re bodies in motion) What we have an appetite for, we move towards (what we desire) Aversion, if we"re repulsed by something, we"ll want to destroy it or get away from. By nature, men are egoists they act out of self interest. All the voluntary actions of men tend to the benefit of themselves. (l. 1. ch. 15) [and] of all voluntary acts, the object is to every man his own good. Felicity : an endless desire to accumulate as much as possible.
