PHI 2383 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Bundle Theory, Res Extensa
Document Summary
16 hume treatise of human nature 1, 2 and 3. Did not accept theory of monads (cid:523)leibniz(cid:524) or descartes"s res extensa. Primary qualities really exist in the material world. Did not believe ideas outside the mind exist. Math argues since it takes practice to understand how operations function. Berkeley agrees locke, believes descartes as wrong to think external world exists at all. Only believes ideas exist, and material world is not actual. Agrees with math argument, since no theories on the external world exist based only on reason. Base of all science is mind since knowledge comes from thought. Hume: impressions and ideas (uman mind has either (cid:498)impressions(cid:499) (cid:523)ideas forced into mind first appearances of sensations, emotions, etc. ) or (cid:498)ideas(cid:499) (created by thought, based on impressions) Impression hits senses first (makes hungry, or thirsty), which then turns to ideas of pain/pleasure then hope/fear, which make new impressions idea by memory/imagination.
