Document Summary

Hearing is the neural perception of sound energy. Consist of alternate regions of compression and rarefaction of air molecules. Compress air sharply, produce air waves that travels across air molecules, perceived as sound. Sound energy: energy within enviro that we"re going to transduce to electrical signals to cns and decoded. In this way, sound waves travel progressively farther from the source, even though each individual air molecule travels only a short distance when it is disturbed. The sound wave dies out when the last region of air disturbance is too weak to disturb the region beyond it. Depends on frequency of air waves, frequency of compression rate, spacing between peaks produced by the sound. Depends on amplitude of air waves / of deflection of tm. Every 10 db indicates a tenfold increase in loudness. External ear: collects and transfers sound waves to the middle ear. Specialized receptors originate within external ear which gathers and focusses onto tm.
