Around that time, key beliefs dominated societal thinking: nationalism. 2. imperialism: social darwinism (a. we all came from a very primitive society, b. survival of the fittest, c. fierce competition between humans and their societies will lead to progress, development, and betterment of the human race) 19th century was very peaceful, and many people had forgotten about the tragedies and horrors of wars. This is how the idea that war could be a good thing a force for change became prevalent. As the likelihood of war increased, people looked forward to the war it would be. Quick, brisk, and merry everyone thought the soldiers would be back by. Wwi the war to end all wars . Size, length, and scope were unprecedented and unexpected.
