Cleavages need 3 things: object of social difference (social categories), subjective awareness, political organization (representation) For an object of social difference to matter then subjective awareness must be present (member of a particular social class) Identify other cultures when talking about political cultures such as elite cultures. Elite cultures: close knit communities, highly educated, middle and upper class in character and organized around certain ideas.
