Cleavages - social groups and how they form. Limits to the problems of social capital. Powers of beliefs and ethical principles, affect the stability of structures and institutional democracies. Pol culture has to have faith in democracy, when stopped, then instability occurs. Service a map that simplifies how people feel and think about politics. Interest effecting political culture: material interest and ideal interests. Ideal interest: matters of left and right and how the political world is behaving. Material and ideal interests are reflections of how people view themselves. Cleavages need 3 things: object of social difference (social categories), subjective awareness, political organization (representation) For an object of social difference to matter then subjective awareness must be present (member of a particular social class) Identify other cultures when talking about political cultures such as elite cultures. Elite cultures: close knit communities, highly educated, middle and upper class in character and organized around certain ideas.
