POL4176 Lecture 11: POL3176 – Extra Notes (June 13th)
Document Summary
The successful models of developmental states that we talk about are all capitalist (we don"t include cuba) The developmental state is a different way of organizing capitalism and the relationship between capital and the state. Closer to keynesianism than neo-liberalism, but not really either. Most developmental states have been authoritarian, at least initially, but not theoretically necessary. Generally speaking, authoritarian regimes have poor economic records because the state"s finances are viewed as belonging to the regime/dictator. Therefore, those states where authoritarianism coincided with their nature as developmental states are the exception to the rule; realistically quite abnormal. The economic success of the developmental state makes political democratization more likely as political spaces and the overarching political system becomes more open and accessible. After wwii and japan"s defeat, japan was almost totally and politically restructured as a consequence wiping the slate clean . This happened in south korea as well. Played a major role in their future economic successes.
