Document Summary
Chapter 6: sensation and perception (part 4 of 4) Kinesthesis: position and movement of individual parts of your body. Vestibular sense: balance, sensing orientation of your body in space. Unpleasant sensory or emotional experience; difficult to study. Sometimes, we may not feel pain even when nociceptors (pain receptors) are active. Sometimes, we may feel pain, even if nothing noxious is happening. Pain withdrawal process is controlled by the spinal cord (not the brain) Bottom-up processing: different fibers detect different types of pain: a-delta fibers: fast acting, transmit sudden, sharp pain (reaction is to pull away, c fibers: transmit longer lasting, duller pain (aching, both fibers have different transmission routes. Top-down processing: inability to feel pain (from birth) leads to early death. You won"t be able to realize if you"re overstretching your joints or muscles, if you"re accidentally cutting off blood circulation to a part of your body, etc.
