Reinforce: event that increases the likelihood of a behavior being repeated, positive reinforcement, presenting a rewarding stimulus, something is added, ex. Giving a student a gold star: negative reinforcement, something is taken away, e(cid:454). Primary reinforces: food when hungry, water when thirsty, taking medication to stop pain (-) Conditioned (secondary) reinforces: effective through learned associations with primary reinforces, money, use it to get your primary reinforces. Continuous reinforcement: desired response is reinforced every time it occurs, ex. Gumball machine, every time you put a quarter you get a gumball: ex. Partial (intermittent) reinforcement: responses are sometimes reinforced, ex. The plush toy machine, where you have to try and grab the toy. Fixed ratio schedule: reinforce behavior after a set of # of responses, ex. Every 4 times a dog sits, give him a treat: e(cid:454).
