Document Summary
Sleep: periodic, natural loss of consciousness, as distinct from unconsciousness resulting from a coma, anesthesia or hibernation. The brain"s auditory cortex responds to sound stimuli during sleep and still process information outside conscious awareness. Two biological rhythms: 24 hour biological clock, 90 minute sleep cycle. Every 90 minutes we cycle through 4 stages developed by eugene aserinsky. Aserinsky discovered rem sleep testing an eeg machine on his 8 year old 1952, figured out that periods of fast eye movements were accompanied by energetic brain activity (rem sleep) Rem sleep rapid eye movement sleep, a recurring sleep stage during which vivid dreams commonly occur, also known as paradoxical sleep because the muscles are relaxed but other systems are active. Yawning stretches neck muscles and increases heart rate with increases alertness. The american academy of sleep medicine has identified the names of stages.
