History: psychology once defined as study of csc = the mind, behaviourism (early 1900s, focus on directly observable behaviour, return to focus on csc: 1960s, technology for study of altered states of csc, eg. Electroencephalogram or eeg to study brain wave patterns. Csc: awareness of self and environment (internal & external events, two functions. 1- control function: control ourselves and our environment: voluntarily initiate and terminate behavioural and cognitive activities. 2- monitoring function: track ourselves and environment for accurate perceptions, memories and thoughts: focus attention on tasks, automaticity: automatic performance is subconscious (ex. Daydream: waking fantasy, different functions (price, escapist, role play, creative. Fantasy- prone personalities: fantasize about 50% of the time, about 4% of the population. Altered states of consciousness: sleep, drugs- induced hallucinations, hypnotic states, near death experiences. Biological rhythms: periodic physiological fluctuations controlled by internal biological clocks. Jetlag: time zone change disrupts circadian rhythm, no day/night information, cycle becomes 25 hours, artificial light delays sleep.
