Document Summary

Function and structure: central nervous and peripheral nervous system, communication network. Receives and then organizes/integrates it with existing information. Neurons: basic function sensory neurons: translate msgs from external environment to internal msgs interneurons: only found in the central nervous system, carry messages between neurons. Motor neurons: sends messages and orders to your musles and glands: basic structure. Cell body: dna and nucleus are found there. Dendrites: increase size of the neuron and receives information from the other neurons. Axon: thin tube like structure, carries out the action potential (electrical impulse) away from cell body. Myelin sheath: some axons are covered with a sheet of fatty. Synaptic cleft: little space before the neurons meet. Presynaptic neuron: neuron that is sending the message to other neurons. Postsynaptic neuron: neuron that is receiving the message: communication with a neuron. Membrane of neuron are porous, ions can move in or outside the neuron.
