Psy1102: s tre s s a n d illn e s s, stress and stressors. Stress and health: definition: state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Acute: short term, chronic: long term (stressed every day) Possible that the stress we"re living today could affect our epigenome which we transmit to future generations: the stress response system. Canon: bodies of human/animals when faced with stressors will go through major physiological changes which prepares us to fight or flight. Fight or flight: stress hormones including epinephrine (adrenalin) and norepinephrine. Short term stress response enhances the survival of the body, however long term stress response is toxic (bad) Selye: when faced with a threatening situation, the body responds to it with general. Adaptation syndrome (gas) in three stages: alarm reaction: mobilize all recourses to fight or flight, resistance: body tries to adapt to the stressful situation and get rid of it.
