Chapter 5 lecture notes: developing through the lifespan. Scientific study of our developmental psychology and change from conception to death. Patterns of development both positive and negative (also includes death and decay) Question of nature & nurture in relation to development. Women: are born with all the eggs they"ll need. Men: begin to produce sperm in adolescence, as they get older the production of sperm slows and the quality of sperm deteriorates. Germinal stage (week 0 to 2): starts when egg and sperm fuse together and the zygote begins to divide. Zygote then begins journey from fallopian tubes to uterus. Stage ends when zygote reaches the uterine wall. Embryonic stage (week 3 to 8) (embryo): placenta forms, nervous system begins to develop, major organs begin to develop, limbs begin to develop. Fetal stage (week 9 to end) (fetus): further growth and development, bones develop, stronger muscle development, major brain development, fetus begins to learn.
