Document Summary
Scieniic study of how people relate to, inluence and think about others. Atribuing behaviour to persons or situaions (atribuion theory) We tend to atribute the behaviour of others to either internal disposiions or external situaions. People typically overesimate role of personal disposiional factors in controlling behaviour. They underesimate role of situaional factors: eg. Come to conclusions about personality traits & disregard situaion. Atempt by person or group to change beliefs/aitudes/behaviours. Indirect form of social inluence is social norms : the implicit rules & expectaions of how to think & behave. Compliance: conform to wishes of inluencing source but do not change private aitudes or beliefs. Internalizaion: change beliefs or behaviours because of genuine belief in inluencing source. Source obtains compliance by seing an example. Source obtains compliance by wielding authority: obedience because inluencer has power to administer rewards & punishments. Conformity to a majority: peer pressure leads to conformity. What condiions determine conformity: ash experiments.
