Personality - an individual"s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting. We are generally fairly consistent in our behaviours. Identify traits - place you in category, place you along continuum (introvert, extravert) Descriptive - designed to nd ways to ef ciently describe people. Psychoanalytic, humanistic, social-cognitive theories - more theoretical, base ideas. Psychoanalysis is a personality theory and it is also related to psychotherapy. Levels of consciousness - your consciousness has a surface area and more parts that are deep. You have access to some but not other parts of your mind: 3 levels of awareness: Conscious mind - current awareness, tip of the iceberg, thoughts, feelings, sensations, memories. Preconscious mind - just below surface, not conscious but readily available. Unconscious mind - seen as the most important, largest portion of mind, radically in uences personality. Not accessible to conscious mind, repressed memories, basic instincts (sexual, aggressive), describes why you might feel anxiety, primary motivating force of behaviour.
