Document Summary
Chapter 5: physical development: birth, motor skills and growth. A lot changes during this time: environment and bodily functions. Humans are di erent from animals since their young are born helpless and this period lasts a while. In general, very rapid then slows down: speeds up again at puberty. True on neuronal level as well: there is an explosion of growth at birth but then pruning occurs. The brain will remain plastic throughout a person"s life, but it will be the most plastic during childhood. Children are more resilient than adults are when it comes to brain damage and other injuries to the brain. Stroke victims can begin to re-train their brains by forcing them to use the limb that is damaged: this will force the surrounding areas in the brain to re-organize themselves in order to function despite having damage. There are some risks from it : greater environment sensitivity, vulnerability of teen years mental health.
