Document Summary

Chapter 5: z-scores - location of scores & standardized distributions. Purpose of z-score or standard scores: identify & describe exact location of each score in distribution. Score by itself does not provide much info about its position within a distribution (ex pg 124) Raw scores: unchanged scores that are direct result of measurement. To make them more meaningful, transform them to new values - such as z-scores. This transformation is 1 purpose of of z-scores - they tell where orig scores are located. Recall that primary goal of z-score: describe exact location of score within distribution. Locations identified by z-scores are same for all distributions - no matter what. Formula for transforming scores into z-scores is: z = x - Here, the numerator of equation x - is a deviation score - measures the distance in points between x & and indicates whether x is located above or below the mean. Determining a raw score (x) from a z-score.
