Statement about the expected cause and effect relationship between two variables, but is more speci c than the original question. Based on previous observations - formed after literature review. Step 4: operational de nition (i. e. measuring your phenomena as variables and testing relationships. Operational de nition: speci c procedure or measure that one uses to test a hypothesis. Need to have a good operational de nition in order to ensure your measure is valid. Can be collected by observation, through surveys, from pre-existing documents, or experimentation. Theory: organized set of principles that explain observed phenomena.
