Prior to ww2: every researcher had their own guidelines for ethical treatment of participants. 1947 - nuremberg code was established to guide ethical treatment of human participants in research. 1964 - declaration of helsinki set guidelines for medical research. 1963 - patients injected with live cancer cells. 1963 - milgram obedience study: asked subjects to electrocute other subjects who made mistakes (no shocks were administered) 1972 - tuskegee study: ~400 men (primarily black) were left to suffer with syphilis for 40 years!!!! just to see the final stages of the disease (even though penicillin was available) 1973 - stanford prison experiment: students such as yourselves were randomly assigned to be a guard or prisoner; study was terminated prematurely. Ensuring welfare and dignity of the individual (human or animal) Ensure that public reports are accurate and honest. Various groups worldwide hold researchers and medical researchers accountable.
