At the end of study, researcher compares scores from each treatment w/ scores w/ every other treatment. Two basic research designs used to obtain groups of scores that are compared in experiment: (pg 228: within-subjects design: different groups of scores all can be obtained from same group of participants. Here researcher gets 2 sets of scores both obtained from same sample: between-subjects design: obtain each of differ groups of scores from separate group of participants. Here researcher compare scores from differ separate groups. Primary function: compares differ groups of individuals & manipulates iv. Researcher manipulates the iv to create differ treatment conditions & separate group of participants is assigned to each of differ conditions. The dv is then measured for each individual & researcher look for differences between groups. General goal: determine whether differences exist between 2 or more treatment conditions (see ex pg 220) Als used in non-experimental & quasi-experimental designs.
