Document Summary

The study of how drugs affect the nervous system and behaviour. Theses are psychoactive drugs ie impact on brain. Barriers: interact with gastrointestinal system; longer to occur " That need pass through the stomach in to the blood stream. In our periphery our blood vessels don"t have any protection, In comparison to the brain, the cappilaries have tight junctions due to the astrocytes. The astrocytes form tight junction with cappilieries in the brain and only certain things can go through the junctions eg. co2 o2; both small and uncharged molecules. Glucose and amino acids can only cross through active transport (i. e atp energy) 3 spots in the brain that don"t have a blood brain barrier. Hormones are released from here to blood stream; i. e this is why there is no barrier. Allows entry of toxic substances that induce vomiting. Depends on influendes how fast we can get rid of drugs.
