PSY 2301 Lecture 1: Lec 1 - Introduction
Document Summary
Knowledge - facts to learn (basic but indispensable) Comprehension - the understanding of the facts tied together. Application - applying the information to other circumstances. Analysis - break down complex item into simpler components. Synthesis - build elements into a whole. Brain is the physical object responsible for behaviour - not the mind. Book distinguishes inherited and learned patterns of behaviour. But to do anything the brain needs: component parts, connections to sense organs and muscles, automatic body maintenance mechanisms. Importance of movement to thought - feedback from the body. Can the self exist without the peripheral nervous nervous system inputs/outputs. We know about locked in syndrome but here there some sensory input and motor information from others etc. When the psyche leaves the body, the person dies. In western european tradition christian adaptations, the non mental psyche became the mind/soul. Realized that there were mechanisms in the body. Could not conceive a mechanical explanation for consciousness.
