Western societies say yes: necessary condition, but not a suf cient condition for marriage. Freud proposed that love is a compensatory mechanism that is a byproduct of our need for sex that is blocked. Behaviourists view love as an innate response due to stimulation of erogenous zones (stimulus- response relation) Social psychologists treat love as an attitude that compels us to think, feel, and act in certain ways. Experiment 1 listed as many features of love in. 3 minutes; tested many undergrads: found 68 descriptors that 2+ people listed. Experiment 2 had two groups of undergrads rate each feature on how central it is to love: list of 10 most central and 10 most peripheral features. Most central factors included friendship, respect, concern for other"s well-being, and supportiveness. Rubin and fehr found slightly different things about love and what it is not: for most people, it is a complex combination of trust, caring, helping, wanting, and commitment.
