Every one sends and receives things differently. Info must get translated and come out the mouth. A lot of info may be lost putting into words. We are similar enough to still interact and create babies. Men and women interact and communicate differently. Women establish topics early in a conversation, and discuss them to death (ie high topical cohesion) How likely you are to stay on one topic. Men show low topical cohesion and cover a lot of topics for a shorter period of time. Theses gender differences exist in 6 year olds and 25 year olds. Men and women may have different expectations about communication based on their preferred style of communication (is discussing 1 topic vs many topics) Predict: men interrupt women more to discuss a new topic. Initial study by zimmerman and west (1975) seemed to suggest that men interrupt more, especially in mixed-gender dyads.
