PSY 3171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Beck Depression Inventory, Statistical Significance, Neuropsychological Test
Document Summary
Significance: statistical significance : whether the finding is unlikely to have occurred by chance. Could this have been a fluke, or is it true data: clinical significance : whether the finding has practical utility. Is this finding important enough to care about it, is it going to help others. Error: every measurement contain error, reliable measures contain less error, but there will always be some, we can never control all the factors that could be influencing someone"s performance on a given test. In experiments, we try to cut down error as much as realistically possible. Participants: telephone survey (have you ever been diagnosed with?) Not as correct, people could mislead you: clinical case series, convenience sample, census or large sample, temporary induction of symptoms in normal individuals. Ex want to study just depression, but not patients that have both depression and anxiety. Slightly unrealistic since a lot of patients have multiple disorders.
