Know the difference between different mental health professionals: who are the people that are trained to try and improve lives of people with mental illness. Understand the debate concerning prescription privileges for psychologists. Abnormality anchored in conformity to social norms o. Consider minorities in society (race, sex orientation, etc. ) Traits can be measured, normal distribution above and below. Allows us to generalize things that we know about cognition, emotional experience, etc. and this model applies. Allows us to view abnormal/normal traits/behaviour on a continuum o. Cutoffs can be arbitrary: atypical: violation of norms. Does it violate social norms: what is acceptable in society, ex. Does the behaviour threaten or make others anxious. Psychopaths: people who seem to have low empathy for others, and engage in behaviour for own means regardless about how it affects others. For most of us, these behaviours would make us uncomfortable.
