Lecture 3: Activities and Employment
Activities of clinical psychologists: assessment, intervention, research, clinical supervision, and
administration.
Consultation: providing expert information to other practitioners working on a case.
Assessment
• makes a large percentage of clinical psychologists engagement
• over a quarter of professional time is devoted to assessment
• assessment might focus on the individual, couple, or family
• may address many different types of questions
Multi-Method Approach: different methods (interview, tests, behavioural tasks) to evaluate the
individual
Multi-Informant Procedure: especially when working with children, looking at thoughts and
behaviour over different situations.
Intervention: professional activity engaged in by highest percentage of clinical psychologists.
Largest percentage of professional time is devoted to intervention.
• many clients only attend a few sessions, drop out rates are high
• a lot of people don't last for more than 4 sessions
Research: half of clinicians engage in research.
• for many conducting research is only small part of the workday
• consuming research is a part of being an ethical researcher
Clinical Supervision
• almost half engage in clinical supervision

• very little research on what makes a good supervisor
Administration
• almost half of psychologists spend some of their time in administration
• being the head of cpa, a lab, a faculty, etc.
Where clinical psychologists work: hospitals, community clinics, residential clinics, child
protection agencies, prisons, family practice, private mental health practice, universities.
