Document Summary

African american teens have lower rates of drinking, smoking and cocaine use. Alcohol and other drug use has been low in religious people with extremely low rates in: orthodox, jews, mormons, mennonites, amish. Teens who come from happy families, do not drink before age 15 and do well in school tend not to use drugs. Peer influence can include what they believe their friends are doing influences their behavior. There is a two-way correlation between friend use and our use: our friends influence us and social networks matter but we also select as friends those who share our likes and dislikes. 26% of high school dropouts and only 6% of college educated people smoke. 3 channels of drug prevention: educate young people about the long term costs of drugs, help youth find other ways to boost self-esteem and purpose, modify peer associations or help them fight against peer pressures.
