There are lots of di erent types of the self, but only two are relevant to this type of psychology : existential self lived experience, categorical self conceptualized understanding or rational understanding. How are they related: think of piaget"s action/re ective thought, ex: saying that i am a runner is my existential self, but saying that i enjoy running once in a while makes it my categorical self. What do babies perceive of others and their self: they don"t really perceive themselves since on the visual level, they can"t see themselves. Challenges the cartesian problem though since they don"t have an understanding of themselves, just others: they do perceive other people though. Theory of the mind is also evidence of self understanding. Gender fundamental category: is dichotomous, existential. Gender in uences the experiences we have speci cally during childhood : colour of the clothes, types of toys, games played, how certain emotions are dealt with, friends.
