As children become both stronger and more dexterous they: can throw and jump much farther, are better at typing, writing, drawing and other fine motor skills. Girls tend to outperform boys in: fine motor skills, gross motor skills that depend on flexibility and balance. Boys tend to outperform girls in: gross motor skills that require strength. Physical activity in middle childhood: promotes growth of muscles and bones. Increases flexibility: promotes good balance and posture, helps to maintain a healthy weight. In recent years, canadian children have shown: a decrease in fitness levels, an increase in overweight and obesity rates, a decrease in health, strength and flexibility. Child(cid:396)e(cid:374) (cid:374)eed : a healthy, balanced diet, at least 1 hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day, vigorous activity at least 3 times per week. Improve motor skills: enhance self-esteem, help children learn initiative.
