It helps individuals remain reality-oriented (we"re alive, we believe in certain things). Religion can help to find this meaning for many. It provides us with hope that something will happen with our soul. Society has institutionalized the importance of religion by creating such rituals as the funeral. Some experts believe that religion functions to relieve death anxiety. For example, our own death, a family member"s death. The meanings of death are socially ascribed through socialization. We"re socialized in our parents" religion, religious rituals, etc. Institutions provide anxiety reduction - done with the afterlife concept. There"s hope for the future -> provides with an afterlife. A reflection of one"s beliefs and values and the nature of reality. A key concept is that there is some form of judgement involved in the process. Death is the curse of adam and eve - believed that they were immortal and lived in paradise.
