Sometimes we do not learn things through conditioning trial and error. Like laws, survival, etc. (ie. drinking bleach will kill you was not learned by trying it and being negatively reinforced. ) This was not learned through experience, but through establishing rules. An instruction indicated how we should respond to rules. You can learn for yourself what is acceptable and unacceptable to a new employer, or you can ask other employees and it will come much quicker. If the rule is directional, it is a instruction. Personal rules (or self instructions): verbal descriptions of contingencies that we present to ourselves to influence our own behaviour. Personal rules tend to be the most effective when they are stated in such a way that there is a clear distinction between when the rule is followed and when it is not. These rules are based on: generalization from other know rules, experience.
