Four areas of focus and attempting to rule out classical conditioning as behaviour moderator: communication vs. Language: animals can communicate through imitation or sensing, but language suggests that there are unlimited possibilities of discussion which animals are simply unable to communicate. Genie experiment objectively then it can be seen that genie was potentially just repeating back what the researcher said rather than having complex cognitive linkages. Alex the parrot learned words which were associated with objects and was able to complete complex tasks using language. Again, the researcher could have been providing unconscious cues. Bonzo is the best example of a chimp with potential language abilities, he learned to use lexigrams through observing his mother being taught. He understand human speech and is able to carry out non-obvious instructions: how self-concept is evaluated: the rouge test in infants, children will not make the connection between themselves and the person in the mirror.
