Oct 22 – when the teens are coming in to talk to us C ULTURE  AND  P UBERTY  PRESENTATION • Puberty is transitional period for teens • India o Have delayed puberty   Older than 13 for women  Older than 14 for boys o Mean age 16 years for girls, 17 year for boys o Stigma for women on their period   Not allowed to go to school  Can’t do certain chores  Can’t eat certain foods o Co­sleeping – don’t have privacy o Make shift bathrooms – no running water, no door o Can’t use disposal napkins, have to rewash cloth each time they go to the bathroom • China o Capping/ hair pinning ceremony: putting a hat on a man at 20, 15­16 pin women’s hair  After engaged, before married  Large celebration o Become and adult when you start helping your family, finding roll in family and society – not about  getting independent o Women considered a woman when she gets married • Beauty o Women chisel teeth into tria ­rite of passage  Damages their teeth, shortening the teeth’s life  Women do it at 13  No pain meds, not sterile  They have a choice now – used to be forced • Rites of passage not just for puberty, its for different stages of your life • Algonquin Indians o Boys are trapped in a cage for 20 days, given hallucigen   Hypothermia, amnesia, etc  Erase memories to separate childhood for adulthood  If they survive they are a man • C ULTURE • *What is Teen Culture to you?* o Generational – teens back in the day have a different culture than today o Cliques o What it means to be a teen in their country o Who you hang out, whats your identity o Has a lot to do with Social media • *What do you think is Canadian culture?* o Polite o Tim hortons o Adapted to the cold o Hockey o scenery o Accepting of other cultures o Peace keepers o Maple syrup o Climate o Well liked o Sterotpyed o Poutine o Bacon o Sugar bush o Saying eh o I don’t like hockey, don’t like the cold • *Why is adolescence such an important life period in relation to the three socialization outcomes?* o 1. Self­regualtion o 2. Role preparation o 3. Cultivation of sources of meaning o Develop cognitively o More pressure to be better behaved bc you are close to adulthood o More experience o Soon you wont have people tell you what to do o More responsibility o Treated different
