-Persons diagnosed with chronic conditions by HCP (Stats Canada, 2015):
-Arthritis: Women: 4,210, Men: 2,607
-Cancer: Women: 510, Men: 253
-High Blood Pressure: Women: 4,812, Men: 2,508
-Persons diagnosed with chronic conditions: arthritis, cancer, high blood pressure.!
-women are about twice as likely to be diagnosed!
-women are more likely to seek out health care!
-symptoms are not as clear, misdiagnosed!
-make excuses (household first)
Health Occupations by Gender
-“Health care is women’s work”; 4/5 paid HCP workers are women; mainly nurses.
- Females in all HCPs.
-Men are majority dentists, dental techs, lab workers & EMTs.
Health Care Professionals’ Perspectives
-Healthcare is more complex.
-Ongoing self-aware & reflective practice.
-important with complex patient cases & own negative emotional reaction
-Being open-minded, non-judgmental Bracketing
-Specific professional ethics, oaths & codes of conduct
-Each profession has its own role & responsibilities, identity, culture & language.
-ie. Nursing student learning to talk to Doctor
-training in silos; more recent IP integration
-complex patient cases leads to more IP teamwork
Nurse Sexualization
-Nurses have been sexualized for a long time (costumes, movies, posters).
-Results in bad representations and misrepresentations:
-ie. References in Songs (Pink: Just like a pill, Blink 182: Enema of the State)
-ie. Misrepresentation in TV shows & movies
How do you deal with sexism and sexist comments, especially from patients?
-Context: portray of media, society & profession, patient’s condition (e.g., brain injury), gender,
age, work.
-Dress and act professionally to prevent (ie. name tag high, bend dressing check, dress
mature, wear a wedding band on ring finger).
-My reaction. Avoid extra attention: is it their personality or a test? “Pick your battles”:
appreciate compliment vs. condemn.
-Give them a warning.
-Uncomfortable cases: ask another to join you to prevent possible assault or, worse case,
request patient change.
How do you deal with aging?
-Growing older adult population.
-Woman live longer than men = Most elderly are woman.
