Violence Against Women
Violence Against Women
-This is similar to most other issues in psychology, as a firm definition of what violence against
women entails is difficult to define.
-A study by Johnson (1995): some include the definition of violence against women
psychologically, emotionally, financially, sexually, sexual assault and its legal definition (broad
spectrum).
-The UN defines violence against women as: “any act of gender-based violence that results in,
or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including
threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or
in private life.”
-Statistics:
-29% of women experienced violence in a marriage or cohabitation
-19% had experienced violence with an ex-partner, while they were separated
—Domestic Violence: “Rule of Thumb”, where it was okay to beat your wife with anything
as long as it was not larger than your thumb
-the hidden problem, as it was not
-unfortunate, but necessary to keep the wife in line when not keeping up with her
role as a woman (may result in dominance and violence)
—Common Couples Violence: where both partners engage in violent acts
-couple is unable to effectively communicate and engage in violent acts in
escalated arguments (pushing, swipe)
-common in every (heterosexual, homosexual) relationship
—Patriarchal Terrorism:!violence is systematic, consistent, and aggressive
-psychological and physical abuse and violence
-When women stay in these relationships, they were seen as having control and making the
decision to leave. Men again are not held accountable for their actions.
-deemed as being her fault, she in essence got what she deserved by staying
Women in Violence Against Women: A Study by Walker (2009)
-Most women who suffer through abuse are often in fear of their partners.
-Violent relationships suffer from a cyclical relationship:
1) Increasing tension in the relationship (things build up and escalates)
2) A violent episode (physical or psychological violence)
3) Period of Love: where promises are often made to change (when episode is completed)
-A woman often feels responsible to help the man change and better himself during the final
period.! She also feels she needs to avoid any further damage or escalation by making her
partner happy.! Over long periods of time this cyclical relationship becomes “normal” and she
feels there is no option to leave.
-feel as if they are responsible for their actions
-If they do leave, it takes a long time to leave as they often return multiple times to an abuser.
Dating Violence
-Women also experience violence, or violent confrontations during the dating phase of a
relationship.
-Violence also comes in the form of yelling, screaming, name-calling, rough physical displays.!
Many women, especially university-age women have experienced this type of violence.
