PSY 3136 Lecture 21: Mental Impariments
Document Summary
Issues: one of the main disputes in this eld is whether general impairment leads to language impairment, assuming a domain-general approach to language (where language is contributed to by many areas of the brain). Intellectual disability: iq 50-70 is mild, 35-50 is moderate, 20-35 is severe. If you are below 50 then there is usually sever corresponding language problems. Concomitant: an issue of having two different conditions simultaneously. So are the language impairments in individuals related or separate from other disorders, we don"t know. With cognitive disabilities there is often an issue with language processing, an inability to organize and store linguistic information ef ciently, poor memory, and an inability to generalize information. Down syndrome: the most common chromosomal abnormality, a trisomy on chromosome 21 which produces multiple physical and mental effects. Production is more impaired than comprehension delayed across all early steps such as babbling, and the production of their rst word doesn"t occur until 2 years.
