Rationalization is making excuses by distorting the threatening facts; you still have emotions. Intellectualization is detaching emotions; grieving a death of someone close turns into a semi- medical discussion about the ailment that caused the death. Reaction formation is believing the opposite of what you are feeling; someone who has latent homosexual feelings may start discriminating against homosexuals.
