• Executive functioning: planning ahead, organizing thoughts, certain parts of memory o Using frontal lobes of the brain o Reduced frontal activity in ADHD • Children with ADHD described as immature • Visual – spatial = things we see or touch • More difficulty for visual­spatial stuff • Working memory deficits is highly linked to academic failure • Kids don’t respond as well to math instruction if they have high levels of inattention The ABCs of ADHD Film • Likely each class has 1 or 2 children with ADHD • 50­70% of people with ADHD have combined type • Adolescents is inner restlessness and needing to be busy at all times • Inattentive second most common type o Girls way more often than boys o If a girl receives a diagnosis they are less likely to receive treatment • Boy/girl ratio 3:1 • First medical paper said it was a problem of bad moral control • ADHD tends to run in the family • No genetic test for ADHD • Food additives might increase a SLIGHT increase in hyperactivity and inattention in ALL children –  does not cause ADHD • Smoking might help them concentrate more and that’s why they are smoking • ADHD continues in
