PAP 3310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Construct Validity, Literature Review, Research
Document Summary
A framework for the collection and analysis of data: it is a direction, although sometimes vague. It must meet criteria in order to produce useful results. Research ethics must be considered when choosing a design. The type of design chosen depends on the kind of explanation sought. Key elements: topic/idea, research question/hypothesis, literature review, research method, data, and research ethics. Research proposal is often one of the first steps in research design. Where do they come from: real life/empirical reality, theory, literature review. Research question and/or research hypothesis: can be combined but need to be related. Locating relevant databases, periodicals, books: conducting both online and in-print searches, variety of subject terms/keywords to search. Existing literature can identify: what is already known, relevant concepts and theories, appropriate research methods, controversies surrounding the topic, inconsistencies, unanswered research questions. The literature review should be critical as well as descriptive.
