Religion has been a major factor on many events since 1970 (iranian islamic revolution, afghanistans holy war, and osama bin laden and al queda, 9/11) Hindu nationalists in india have demanded construction of hindu temple on hill occupied by mosque. Oppression of religious minorities under chinese govt. Religious fervor cased by fundamentalists, term originated in us as a way to return to core teachings/beliefs of faith and focus on scriptural authority. Reaction against values associated with secularism and modernity. Reject human institutions such as courts/legislature, place authority in religion (ex: if religion bans homosexual acts they will oppose it, same with science and evolution) Fundamentalists seen as highly conservative and have good-evil perception of the world, believing social groups/causes (ex: abortion) to be evil. Term also used for non-christian groups such as muslims/hindus. Power over human life and death through science/medicine has raised concerns for religions (esp abrahamic faiths) which view humans as sacred and gods special creation.
