SRS 2398 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Sub-Saharan Africa, Glasser'S Choice Theory, Cardiovascular Disease
Document Summary
11/21/16 (15) religion, gender, and health constrained choice theory. In sub-saharan africa, attitudes were not determined by religion but by culture and ethnicity. Once this is taken into account, fear or avoidance as a result of a religious outlook is actually a cultural/ethnic outlook. Religion has a trans-national and trans- generational status; it is not determined just by a culture or a generation, meaning that it is not a thing of the moment. Many men need to leave their village to find employment. Because they are away from their local community and their family, they are more likely to engage in sexual activity with someone other than their spouse. This increases the likelihood of hiv/aids contraction and transmission. Gendered health differences in the usa some examples: women live longer then men, but also experience more illness than men and, in later years, a diminished quality of life. The explanation for this most likely social and less so biological.
