Document Summary
British, american, and canadian cases from religious biases to secular perspectives: Abortions - immigration scares: this fear over breeding. They would be out bred, this made people want to have more babies. They were also worried about the decline of religion, and darwin"s book made them worried of being replaced and going extinct. Fear that woman would start to gain power, controlling their own bodies - controlling the number of children they have- becoming a competitor to males. This has everyone thinking they should clamp down with strict abortion laws. Lord ellenborough"s act (1803): in britain, from now on, if you have an abortion after quickening (movement is felt, you can feel the baby), you will face the death penalty. If you have one before quickening, it would be considered a misdemeanor. Uk statute: make the penalty the same regardless of when you have the abortion (before or after the quickening): life imprisonment or permanent exile.
