Originally mormons had nothing to do with polygamy, they were monogamous. Joseph smith: 1830 - new york farmer, publishes the book of mormon. In his belief system he claimed that the book was transcribed from golden plates delivered to him from the angel maroney. Ohio, then to missouri, but they kept getting pushed away because there were rumours that they were engaging in polygamy. They were exterminated by the governor of missouri, they either had to leave to a different land and not come back or they would be exterminated by a militia. They kept going in hopes to establish the city of nauvoo. Smith himself mandates plural marriage in 1843 in illinois (for his group). He was eventually charged with treason for promoting polygamy, him and his brother were murdered by a lynch mob in a jail in. Over the years, polygamists appealed for protection from the federal government but they got told that they wouldn t intervene.
