SOC 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Jeans, Culture Shock, Subculture
Document Summary
Although we are all the same species biologically, we have a wide range of differences around the globe. Culture includes: the knowledge, language, values, customs, and material objects that are passed from person to person and from one generation to the next. Culture shock: the personal disorientation that comes from encountering an unfamiliar way of life. No cultural trait is inherently (cid:498)natural(cid:499) to humanity. What is natural to our species is the capacity to create and learn cultural traits. Artifacts, tools and technology we create, develop and use. All cultures are built on 5 major components: symbols language. A symbol is anything that carries a particular meaning for people. Anything that meaningfully represents something else to others: words, numbers, pictures, colours, gestures, facial expressions, etc. There can be conflict with symbolic meanings over time. Blue jeans used to be only for the working class (cid:498)poor people(cid:499) There is no such thing as autonomous culture.
